You may want to set your DVR because this weekend will be a busy one. The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards airs on Sunday evening as does the series finale of “Dexter” and the second-to-last episode of “Breaking Bad.” “Ray Donovan’s” first season concludes that night, too. And let’s not forget “Boardwalk Empire” and the premiere of Showtime’s “Masters of Sex.” Since I’m still playing catch-up with “Breaking Bad” and “Dexter,” the finales, for me, will have to wait. I also recommend watching “Masters of Sex” on XFINITY, like I did, before the premiere. Challenging, isn’t it? To help you decide, I’ve compiled a list of five shows (a couple of the aforementioned ones included) that are worth checking out this weekend.
“The Watsons Go To Birmingham”: This is one the whole family can enjoy. Hallmark Channel’s “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” is about a family from Flint, Michigan who travels to Birmingham, Alabama during the summer of 1963. It stars Anika Noni Rose, Wood Harris, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and David Alan Grier. “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” premieres tonight at 8 p.m. EST on Hallmark Channel. [Watch here]
“65th Primetime Emmy Awards”: Gladiators will have a new reason to celebrate Monday morning if “Scandal’s” Kerry Washington takes home a statuette Sunday. Washington along Alfre Woodard and Don Cheadle are up for Emmys. Cheadle also will present a tribute marking the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on CBS at 8 p.m. ET Sunday. [Watch here]
“Boardwalk Empire”: Jeffrey Wright lived up to my expectations as Dr. Valentin Narcisse in “Boardwalk Empire.” And that was only in one episode. On Sunday, we should find out more about the mysterious Narcisse and how he’ll shake things up on the Boardwalk. (He already called Chalky White out and managed to get a piece of the Onyx Club. And the lady who lied about being raped … well, we saw what happened to her.) “Boardwalk Empire” airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on HBO. [Watch here]
“Super Soul Sunday”: OWNS feel-good Sunday show returns this weekend. Her guests t his week are Mariel Hemingway and Bobby Williams. A promo showed that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz will be another guest. Previous seasons showed Oprah Winfrey having heart-to-hearts with Maya Angelou, India.Arie and Iyanla Vanzant. “Super Soul Sunday” premieres Sunday at 11 a.m. ET on OWN. [Watch here]
“Revolution”: This NBC hit returns on Wednesday so why not spend some time this weekend catching up on the first season? This post-apocalyptic show features a great ensemble that includes Giancarlo Esposito and Maria Howell. ”Revolution” returns Wednesday Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC. [Watch here]
“The Wire”: Can you believe President Barack Obama’s favorite show never got an Emmy nod any major category?! Isn’t that a crime? The Writers Guild of America lists “The Wire” as one of TV’s best written shows. It is. Don’t take our word for it. Check out a few episodes of this HBO hit and let me know what you think.
