Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” drew slightly more than 10 million viewers in its debut Monday night — an audience tally that’s being hailed as the best premiere for any Fox drama in six years.

It was a transitional evening in the nascent fall TV season, which begins officially next Monday (Sept. 23), although a handful of shows will be introduced this week.

Monday night saw the series premiere of “Sleepy Hollow,” the season premiere of “Bones” (both on Fox) and the season premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC. At the same time, one high-profile summer series, CBS’s “Under the Dome,” had its season finale.

Both “DWTS” and “Under the Dome” did better than “Sleepy Hollow,” but for a new series based on a memorable but very old short story (Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” from 1820), “Sleepy Hollow’s” 10 million viewers at 9/8c was a victory for Fox, which fared badly a year ago with the introduction of the short-lived “Mob Doctor” in the same period.

“Dancing With the Stars” won the night with an average of 16.2 million viewers over the length of its two-hour premiere from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (7-9c). And the one-hour season finale of “Under the Dome” drew 11.84 million from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. (9-10c).

The second hour of “DWTS” was the only time period competitor to beat “Sleepy Hollow,” which drew an audience of 10.05 million at 9 p.m. “Bones” had 7.5 million viewers for its ninth-season premiere at 8/7c.
