Sharon Osbourne revealed a secret from her much-younger days about an affair she had with a young comedian who became one of TV’s biggest stars.
His name was Jay Leno. The revelation certainly came as a surprise to Osbourne’s co-hosts Monday on “The Talk,” which started its new season on CBS. But the story was more sweet than sordid.
Sharon, 60, told the story as part of a “Big Secret” theme on “The Talk” this week. She was 25 at the time, she said, and she was newly arrived in America from England. That time frame would place the story in around 1978-79. She married Ozzy Osbourne in 1982. Leno married his wife, Mavis, in 1980.
“When I was 25, I had just moved to America,” Sharon said. “I didn’t know many people — remember, 25 — I had met my [future] husband but we weren’t together, we were just friends. “So I’m here, I didn’t have a boyfriend — I never did date a lot at that time anyway because I was not very dateable. Anyway, my friend worked at this place and she said, ‘You have to come down to this club where I work because it’s full of men …’ ”
The club turned out to be a comedy club, and Sharon saw Leno perform and liked him. So rather than just meet him in some “normal” way, she and her mischievous friend decided they would “prank call” him. “He liked my voice,” Sharon said, “and I kept calling.”
A short time later, he came to her home to meet her in person and they had a fling, she said, but it didn’t go any farther than that. Among other reasons, Jay soon met “the love of his life.”
“A couple of months later, he brought around the real love of his life to meet me,” Sharon said, and the three went out to dinner at a fast-food restaurant. The other woman was likely Mavis, who Leno married in 1980. The two are still married.
