It was a classic late-night segment so well-suited for a Friday night in August.
Jay Leno and a “master” of the deep fryer — Destination America’s Jim Stacy — brought some deep-fried favorites from the nation’s summer state fairs to the “Tonight Show” stage on Friday night for a segment that devolved into a whiskey wingding.
“It’s time to fry it and try it,” announced Leno as he introduced Stacy, the towering, bearded co-host of “Deep Fried Masters,” seen Monday nights at 10/9c on the Discovery-owned cable channel known as Destination America.
“Never trust a skinny cook,” Stacy advised Leno as the fry-cook began pouring Irish whiskey into a bucket of funnel-cake batter. A few moments later, the batter was used to coat the segment’s first deep-fried food — a banana that was dunked in a deep-fryer, then glazed with chocolate and caramel sauces and served with bacon grease-infused whipped cream on the side.
After Leno tried a few bites of this deep-fried delight, it was time to move on to even more exotic deep-fried fare: A deep-fried pickle, which Stacy billed as a “vegetarian” option for people who don’t eat corn dogs; and deep-fried cinnamon buns.
For the pickle-tasting, fellow “Tonight Show” guest Jason Sudeikis was invited over from the couch to participate. And after he took one bite of the pickle, he needed something to wash it down, and the only drink available was the open bottle of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. So Jason took a generous swig from the bottle, which was then grabbed and upended by Stacy.
Meanwhile, a pair of cinnamon buns were skewered and coated in tempura batter and then submerged in a deep fryer. After being dressed with a sugary white sauce and bacon bits, Sudeikis and Leno each bit down on the buns, which sent Jason back to the whiskey bottle.
