Included are Shadows Over Chinatown, starring Sidney Toler in one of his last Chan films, plus Docks of New Orleans, Shanghai Chest, and The Golden Eye starring Roland Winters, the last actor to play the detective on film. As early as 1926, the first of more than 48 Charlie Chan films was put on the silver screen. Actor Warner Oland, born in Sweden, began a popular run for Fox in 1931 in Charlie Chan Carries On. After its success, Fox would produce 15 more Chan films starring Oland. Not surprisingly, the films became the most popular in 1930s China. After Oland died, Sidney Toler, an American actor with Scottish roots, took on the Chan role. Toler starred in 22 Chan films, first for Fox and later for Monogram Studios. After Toler’s death, Roland Winters became Chan in six more films. The character has also been featured frequently on radio, television and in the comics. Buy the DVD right here.

On the Road

Jack Kerouac’s revered landmark novel ‘On the Road‘ comes to the screen at last, in one of the most anticipated and talked-about movies of the year. The epic road movie, featuring a one-of-a-kind ensemble cast, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Since the book’s publication in 1957, a movie version of ‘On the Road’ has been an elusive dream for a wide range of filmmakers. Executive producer Francis Ford Coppola bought rights to the book in 1980, and 30 years and several screenplay adaptations later, hired award-winning Brazilian director Walter Salles (Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries) to helm the project. Salles traced Jack Kerouac’s own late-1940s journey across America in preparation for filming. Thanks to a remarkable cast, including Kristen Stewart as she’s never been seen before, the result has been worth the wait. ‘On the Road’ tells the timeless story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley, Byzantium, Control), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of charming ex-con Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund, Inside Llewyn Davis, TRON: Legacy), a free-spirited, fearless, fast-talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart, The Twilight Saga). Traveling cross-country, the new friends venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” – the pure essence of experience. Seeking uncharted terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounters an eclectic mix of men and women who each indelibly impact their journey toward self-discovery. Buy the DVD right here.

Three Faces East

During World War I, the fate of nations were decided not on the battlefield but at the imposing estate of Sir Winston Chamberlain, the First Sea Lord of the British Admiralty. There, covert agents may or may not be allied – the film carefully doesn’t reveal its hand until late – in deceit and disguise, moves and countermoves that center on a scheme to torpedo American transport ships. Eric Von Stroheim, who was both a famed dictator of silent films and a powerful on-screen presence (he played the enigmatic Max in Billy Wiler’s Sunset Boulevard), “does splendid work” (Mordaunt Hall, The New York Times) as Sir Winston’s butler, a decorated Belgian war hero. And lovely Constance Bennett (Topper) portrays a young lady who gains entry to Sir Winston’s home with a tragic story, a hidden gun and the code words “three faces east.” Roy Del Ruth (1931′s The Maltese Falcon, Kid Millions) directs.
