Geraldo Rivera says he was lonely and feeling a bit depressed late Saturday night when he shot a photo of himself nude from the waist up and posted it on Twitter with a message calling attention to his age — 70 — and his apparent physical fitness.
The photo became much talked-about as some likened it to photos unfortunately tweeted by the likes of former New York Rep. Anthony Wiener (now running for mayor of New York City), although Wiener’s famous photos were much more explicit and forced him to resign from the U.S. Congress.
Among those talking about Geraldo’s photo was late-night host David Letterman, who made it the centerpiece of his “Top Ten” list Monday night on his CBS “Late Show.”
This “Top Ten” was titled “The Top Ten Thoughts Going Through People’s Minds Upon Seeing the Geraldo Photo.” Among the items:
“No. 10: Does this mean he’s running for office?”
And “No. 3: Cancel my entree!”

Geraldo explained later that he tweeted the photo in a moment of weakness stemming from loneliness when he returned home in the middle of the night in the wee hours of Sunday morning after hosting his Saturday night show on Fox News Channel. He was interviewed here about the picture (which has apparently been deleted from his Twitter account).
Letterman also mentioned the Geraldo picture in his monologue on Monday’s show. So did Dave’s rival, Jay Leno, on NBC’s “Tonight Show.” Watch both monologues here:
