Sharks attacked Twitter Thursday night when social media went bizerk over the premiere of Syfy’s original movie “Sharknado,” which promptly turned into an Internet sensation and became the top trending topic of the night.
The summer campfest is of the so-bad-it’s-good variety, featuring a ridiculous premise, campy dialogue — and the return of (gasp!) Tara Reid (“American Pie”), along with newly minted Chippendale (and former “90210″ star) Ian Ziering.
How awfully awesome was it? I mean, the title alone is sharktastic. (Let’s just say Shark Week might be a wee bit jealous right about now that #Sharknado stealing some of its thunder.) In “Sharknado,” a supersized storm sucks sharks from the ocean and hurls them onto land, with divorced couple Ziering and Reid teaming up with the local town drunk (John Heard of “Home Alone”) to “investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies.”
Since everyone was chomping on its cheesy deliciousness, Syfy has already decided to bring back the #SharkNado next week, announcing they will re-air it next Thursday at 7 p.m. (EST), for anyone who missed the boat.
The fin-frenzy did not translate into killer ratings, however; according to early overnight Nielsen numbers, roughly 1.3 million total viewers watched “Sharknado,” which is only slightly higher than your average Syfy flick. But it’s still a winner for dominating the social media scene, generating more than 386,000 social interactions and, at its peak, capturing 5,000 Tweets per minute, according to Variety.
People were Tweeting up a storm about “Sharknado,” so here are some of the best celebrity Tweets:
Glen Mazzara (former “Walking Dead” EP): “I feel so hungover after #SharkNado. What did we do last night?”
“Lost” boss Damon Lindelof: “This movie is such a ripoff of THE BICYCLE THIEF. #LiveTweetingSharknado #Highbrow.”
