“Hannibal” could be getting a wonderfully creepy relative next season.
As has been rumored, “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller wants David Bowie to play the uncle of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). (Sounds kinda perfect, at least from a cheek bones perspective.)
“We have reached out to David Bowie to see if he’s interested and available,” Fuller confirmed to E! News. “We would love for him to play Hannibal’s uncle, who is a character from the literature and in the books.”
It seems that Dr. Lecter’s uncle, Count Robert Lecter, was killed off by Nazis in the books, but “since our timeline is a little more present, there’s a little bit of J.J. Abrams-style alternate universe storytelling where he could still be alive,” Fuller explains to E!.
Producers haven’t gotten an answer from Bowie’s camp yet, but he’s hopeful the singer will bite on the offer.
Production on Season 2 of NBC’s killer masterpiece “Hannibal” begins in August in Toronto.
While Fuller was making his dream casting wishlist, he also revealed to E! another pivotal role coming to the NBC series next season: Barney, an orderly at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where the framed Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) has been criminally institutionalized at the hands of Dr. Lecter.
“That will be some fun stunt casting,” Fuller says. “I would love to bring in Chi McBride, if he’s available. There are so many great actors I would love to work with.”
