A scary moment unfolded near the set of the “Today” show at Rockefeller Plaza Thursday morning when an emotionally disturbed man pulled out a knife and harmed himself.
The unidentified man in his 50s was ranting about something while in the crowd and then took a blade to his wrists and cut himself. He was tackled and subdued by the NBC security team and then taken in custody.
“Today” show host Matt Lauer reported about the incident on-air shortly after it happened around 7:50 a.m.
“He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself in some way, so he’s now being attended to by medical personnel,” Lauer said, adding that the man said he intended only to harm himself and no one else in the crowd was injured.
Security crews and the New York City Police Department temporarily shut down parts of the Plaza until the situation was under control. The “Today” anchors were forced to move back inside to the studio while law enforcement investigated the scene.
Lauer also Tweeted about the unnerving incident Thursday morning: “All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD.”
Then he added, “Sorry, a man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He is under police control. In custody.”
The man’s mental condition is being evaluated at a local hospital and his injuries are not life-threatening, according to the AP.
