Cinema Asian America - June Highlights.

June not only marks the kick off to summer, but the start to a whole season of exciting new movie releases and also, a new offering Cinema Asian America, which will each month highlight the filmmaking of a different Asian American community.

We start this month with the Filipino American community. From singer Bruno Mars to “Dancing with the StarsCheryl Burke, Filipino Americans are a dynamic creative force in all realms of the entertainment and arts worlds – and filmmaking is no exception. A scan of some of the most important Asian American films made in the past ten years yield many pioneering pinoy and pinay directors, and this month’s collection of films provides a primer – and window into – the diverse stories and voices that make up this community. Highlighted are a trio of award-winning documentaries from Sundance and Tribeca Film Festival veteran Ramona Diaz: “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey,” “Imelda” and “The Learning.”

In our new releases, American independent films are crossed with some of the most critically acclaimed new films from Asia to offer a glimpse at the rich spectrum of films being made from Asia to America. These include the highly anticipated family drama from Quentin LeeWhite Frog” that boasts a cast for the ages, including Booboo Stewart (“Twilight: Breaking Dawn“), Harry Shum Jr. (“Glee“), Joan Chen, BD Wong and Kelly Hu, as well as David Boyle’s SXSW-hit “Daylight Savings,” a slyly comic tales of a romantically-down-on-his luck musician who hits the road to find himself.
