UPDATE: CBS has pulled Monday night’s season finale of “Mike & Molly” — which involved a tornado hitting Chicago — after a tragic series of tornadoes swept across Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa on Sunday and Monday afternoon.
“Due to the tragic events this afternoon in Oklahoma, we are pre-empting tonight’s season finale of ‘Mike & Molly,’ which has a related storyline,” said a CBS spokesman, according to EW. “A repeat broadcast of Mike & Molly will run in the time period. The season finale will be broadcast at an appropriate date.”
Is trouble afoot for “Mike & Molly“?
We’ve wondered how long Melissa McCarthy will stick with the CBS sitcom now that the comedian is a major movie star (“Bridesmaids”), but the shake-up currently going on behind-the-scenes is actually happening at the top.
Series creator and showrunner Mark Roberts is leaving the show after three seasons — the season finale airs tonight — and stepping down to focus on other projects, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Current co-executive producer Al Higgins will take over showrunner responsibilities for the upcoming fourth season.
It’s interesting timing, considering “Mike & Molly” was recently renewed by CBS for a 22-episode fourth season — BUT was notably omitted from the network’s fall schedule and has been benched until midseason.
CBS said last week of the move, which has many fans of the show grumbling, that it was simply a decision to allow room for the network to launch the four new comedies they have on the way for fall 2013.
Don’t worry too much about the comedy couple though; last week CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler assured viewers, “It’s a show we love,” according to EW, and saving it for midseason, “gives us a chance to bring a show in at midseason … that is a known asset, that people love.”
The Season 3 finale of “Mike & Molly” airs Monday at 9:30/8:30c on CBS.
