Multiple episodes of “The Vampire Diaries” have featured ghostly appearances from former characters. That’s one of the freedoms of a supernatural show. This week’s installment,”The Walking Dead”, may have been the most effective because there was some suspense about whether they might stick around permanently. In a nutshell, Bonnie (Kat Graham) casts a mini-version of the spell that will bring all of the world’s dead back to life, resulting in reunions both touching and scary. Here are the highlights.
Bonnie Drops the Veil
After linking Katherine to her to prevent her from backing out of the deal they made, in which Katherine agreed to give Bonnie the tombstone in exchange for immortality, Bonnie casts the spell dropping the veil. This disturbance in the force causes a blackout in Mystic Falls, for no real reason other than that it makes the returns of dead characters more dramatic. Keeping the names of the returning actors out of the opening credits also heightened the surprise factor.
Damon and Alaric: Reunited and It Feels So Good
Ghost Alaric (Matt Davis) visits Damon (Ian Somerhalder). He delivers the exposition that the veil is only down in Mystic Falls “expression triangle” where all of the massacres happened. He points out not every ghost has a reason to come back to Mystic Falls so the town won’t be overrun.
A Reunion Makes Elena Feel All the Feelings
Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) whole “turning off the humanity” arc has been a great allegory for depression. This blog post that was all over my Facebook wall today really brought it home. Elena sunk into a deep depression which, in supernatural terms, is turning off your humanity. Focusing on one emotion is the vampire equivalent of therapy and medication. So, last week she finally admitted that she had a problem, and this week the treatment works.
Catch-up on Last Week’s Episode of “The Vampire Diaries” on xfinityTV:
When the blackout hits, and the Salvatore brothers figure out that Bonnie and Katherine are working together, Elena is thrilled to join in the search for them so that she can achieve her goal of killing Katherine. Damon thinks killing Katherine will unleash all her emotions, setting her back to square one. She argues that murdering her doppelganger will be like vampire Zoloft. She stakes Damon in the stomach so she can chase Katherine with impunity.
In the cave, Elena stakes Katherine. Because of the link, in another area, Bonnie starts bleeding. Stefan (Paul Wesley) tackles Elena to stop her from killing Katherine, explaining she is linked to Bonnie. He lectures her about how killing Katherine won’t make her feel better about Jeremy. She is sick of Stefan acting like the twelve-stepper who offers everyone else unsolicited advice about their problems, so she hits him in the face.
Elena visits Jeremy’s grave and mocks the “brother and friend” text on the tombstone. What would she have preferred? “He saw dead people. Now he has joined them?” She admits that killing Katherine is just a distraction. She can’t move on from his death and doesn’t want to feel like this anymore. The ghost of Kol grabs her by the neck. She tells him to kill her. He strangles her until she loses consciousness. Before he can finish the job, Ghost Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) uses his crossbow to shoot him. Then Stefan kills him again. Elena wakes up and sees Jeremy. They embrace and Elena is finally able to get closure and return to her old self.
Silas Is Bigger and Badder Than Anyone Realized
Silas appears in the cave, telling Bonnie he has been inside her head. She saw him as disfigured because that is how he wanted her to see him. She still has no idea what he really looks like. He orders her to finish dropping the veil so he can die. Gram (Jasmine Guy) appears and tells her that she can stop Silas because expression is a manifestation of her will.
With Damon’s help, she immobilizes Silas, then casts a spell that turns him to stone. Damon points out if Silas gets another drop of blood he will reanimate. So, in their final moments together before Bonnie puts the veil back up, they throw Silas in the trunk of a car and prepare to dump his body. Ric takes the cure out of Silas’s pocket, hands it to Damon, and tells him to use it to get Elena back.
Bonnie Goes Rogue
Emboldened by seemingly stopping Silas, Bonnie decides to save Jeremy’s life. She recites a spell, then she falls to the ground. When Bonnie wakes up, Gram tells her the spell was too much. Bonnie looks down and sees her body on the ground. She’s dead.
The Full Unveiling
Matt (Zach Roerig) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) see her ex-boyfriend, Alexander the vampire hunter. The power comes back on as all of The Five appear in Mystic Falls. The veil is all the way down, all of the dead are back, and all hell is going to break loose.
“The Vampire Diaries” airs Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
