Fast and Furious 6” director Justin Lin, who recently announced he will not return to helm the next installment of the franchise, has acquired the film rights for David Henry Hwang’s acclaimed Broadway production, “Chinglish.” Hwang will write the screenplay for the big screen adaptation, and Lin will produce and direct.

After an acclaimed run at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, Chinglish was one of Broadway’s best reviewed productions of 2011, and recently concluded runs in Berkeley and Los Angeles. In Pulitzer Award-winning Hwang’s script, an American businessman arrives in a bustling Chinese province looking to score a lucrative contact for his family’s sign-making firm. He soon discovers that the complexities of such a venture far outstrip the expected differences in language, customs and manners—and call into question even the most basic assumptions of human conduct.
