A juicy new report claims that “American Idol” concocted a “secret plot” to fire Mariah Carey and replace her with former “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez after Carey, an expensive addition who was supposed to be the big draw this season, failed to boost ratings.
Prompted by a ratings panic as numbers for the aging reality show continue to decline now into its twelfth season, producers allegedly hatched a plan to bring back fan favorite J.Lo in midseason to give the show a pop of drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (Because the “feud” between Carey and Minaj was clearly a bust.)
Sources tell THR that Carey responded with threats of a lawsuit and the idea was abandoned. There are reportedly still plans in the works for Lopez to return for an appearance on “Idol’s” season finale.
For their part, a Fox spokesperson tells THR, “This is just another ridiculous ‘Idol’ judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale.”
“Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe also told the trade publication, “I have not been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season.”
No matter what scheming may or may not be going on behind-the-scenes of the singing competition, we’re betting you will not see Mariah Carey on the “Idol” judges’ panel next season. Considering the disappointing ratings, it’s been speculated for some time that the search is already on to potentially replace all three of this season’s new judges, including Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban.
