David Letterman wasted no time remarking on his late-show rival Jay Leno’s “retiring” from “The Tonight Show,” which was announced Wednesday by NBC, as the network prepares to transition Jimmy Fallon into the coveted job in February 2014.
How else would Dave commemorate news of Leno’s second departure from “The Tonight Show” but with the ole “Top 10 List” on “The Late Show with David Letterman“?
The list included enjoyable entries such as “9. Now I’m the only guy in late-night television who’s not a Jimmy” and “3. He’s mom’s favorite talk-show host.”

During his monologue, Letterman went to his go-to joke since 1992, when Leno “won” the “Tonight Show” job over Dave after Johnny Carson retired.
“I got a call from my Mom today. She says, Well, David, I see you didn’t get ‘The Tonight Show’ again. What are you gonna do, Mom!”
Leno also addressed his departure in his monologue Thursday night, opening with a similarly themed joke.
“I had a really awkward day today…I had to call David Letterman and tell him he didn’t get ‘The Tonight Show’ again! Awful! Terrible!”
