Game of Thrones” returned for its third season Sunday night and fans welcomed the fantasy drama back by making it the most watched episode of the series to date.

The Season 3 premiere of “Game of Thrones” drew 4.4 million viewers for its 9 p.m. premiere and that number increased to 6.7 million viewers for the night when the repeat airings behind it were combined. That’s up 13% from its premiere opener last year.

It’s a significant coup for the HBO series; not only was there the disadvantage of airing on Easter Sunday night, “GOT” also faced stiff competition from the Season 3 finale of AMC’s monster hit “The Walking Dead.”
