Early ‘DWTS’ Shocker: Who Was the First to Go Home?

Dorothy Hamill, Tristan MacManus (ABC)

After Dorothy Hamill had such a hard time performing with her injury on “Dancing with the Stars” last night, I feared the elimination show might have a twist with the ice skater quitting the show instead of being voted off. I thought the only other celebrity who would leave Tuesday night might be D.L. Hughley. Although the comedian did slightly better than on season 16′s first week, that wasn’t saying much.

On Tuesday night, Ingo Rademacher, Wynonna Judd, and Sean Lowe were declared safe right off the bat, with the “DWTS” sound system acting up so badly some of the celebs didn’t hear their good news. Then Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovsiy were chosen for the encore dance while Victor Ortiz and his partner Lindsay Arnold were the first couple called in jeopardy.

Aly Raisman was shown backstage looking for her partner Mark Ballas in footage shown from Monday’s performance show. And, in a shocker, D.L. was suddenly told he would be coming back next week with partner Cheryl Burke! Wow. One of the worst dancers in “DWTS” history wasn’t done yet. So would my theory hold – that Dorothy might simply announce she couldn’t continue? Or did her low score from last night, a 15, meant viewers didn’t vote for her? I didn’t see how that was possible, because she was still America’s Sweetheart after all these years.

Lindsay and Gleb Savchenko, who was partnered with Lisa Vanderpump, were given a “DWTS” PR package in which they could talk about who they were. What, to make us forget Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Chelsie Hightower?

Next we saw a Monday night footage package from Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff. “I can’t see,” Jacoby told her when he was hidden under Karina’s long trench coat. Backstage, Karina told him she loved his facial expressions and she was so proud of him.

No surprise then as Zendaya and Kellie were declared safe. Jacoby did one of his victory dances when he was told he would come back next week, too! He was such a cutup.

Later, Brooke Burke-Charvet tried to interview Jacoby, but once again, I couldn’t understand anything he said.

Okay, so Dorothy and Andy learned their fate. But first, Andy was shown babbling in the “DWTS” parking lot about his Monday night and he was so happy he’d done so well. Dorothy’s footage from last night was tragic. Her partner Tristan MacManus comforted her backstage as best he could.

Well, I was wrong—again! Dorothy was called safe (although her reaction was so odd. She looked like she had lost!). That meant Andy and Sharna were in danger of leaving and I was panicking as the comedian has been one of my favorites all season. To me Andy was what “DWTS” was all about—a person you wouldn’t expect could ever learn to dance WAS doing it!

I wasn’t the only one! The press room exploded with cheers as Andy was declared safe and Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb or Victor and Lindsay looked like they were going home. But suddenly, OMG, Dorothy was announcing she was withdrawing from the competition! I was right! She said her doctor told her she had to do it. No wonder she had looked so strange earlier.

So we said goodbye to Dorothy, which was sad because she was such a classy lady. “I’m going to miss you all,” the emotional ice queen told her fellow dancers. Tristan led Dorothy in her last DWTS “goodbye” dance.
