After playing romantic hero Jax on “General Hospital” on and off from 1996 to 2011, Ingo Rademacher took a break from acting to enjoy family life with his wife and their two young sons and pursue his love of outdoor sports near their Hawaii home.
But “GH” fans were thrilled when Ingo agreed to step back into the spotlight by doing “Dancing with the Stars.” With Ingo’s athletic prowess and chemistry with his “DWTS” partner, Kym Johnson (they were both raised in Australia), the soap hunk looks like one to watch in the ballroom.
And in another huge plus for soap fanatics, according to a recent EW.com report, Ingo will also be coming back to “GH” while he’s in Los Angeles, reprising his Jax and Brenda supercouple with actress Vanessa Marcil!
Here, Ingo tells xfinityTV what he’s been doing during his “GH” break and what we can expect when he dons the dance shoes.
Why did you decide to do “DWTS”?
They’ve asked me in the past and I think I was always too scared to do it and we’ve been been living in Hawaii for a year. I’ve been done with “General Hospital” for about a year and it’s been pretty cruise-y there for me, [I’ve] just been paddle board racing and getting in the ocean and getting fit and enjoying the Hawaiian lifestyle and this was good timing for me because I wasn’t really doing anything, especially in the wintertime over there now and when they called, I was like, “I’ll do it.” I didn’t think about it very long because I thought, if I think about this for a day or two, I’m going to think about all the rehearsals and I’m going to call ["DWTS All-Stars" competitor and fellow "GH" star] Kelly Monaco and go, “Kelly, how is it really?” and she would have been like, “it’s really hard.” I would have found reasons not to do it so I [just] said, “sign me up!”
Now that you’re on board, has Kelly Monaco given you advice?
I talked to her and she said, ‘You’re going to love it.’ She said, ‘It’s hard work but you’re really going to enjoy it; it’s a great atmosphere, everybody’s super nice and just have fun with it. That’s the most important thing. You’re not a dancer.’ But I’m going to try to be!
“GH” star Jack Wagner did the show as well–
Oh, Jack did it as well?! I haven’t spoken to him about it. I just found him on Twitter the other day! Like, “Jack, how are you doing?”
So you’ve had a little break from acting?
I’ve been out of the loop, yeah. I work out a lot [in Hawaii]. My wife and two kids are there, we have an acre of property. My mornings consist of driving up to Turtle Bay resort, which is a 20-minute drive [from home]; we put our paddle boards in the water and we paddle downwind for about 11 miles and leave our car down there and that’s [just] our morning workout. And then there’s other stuff—I go to the pool; I swim for an hour at the pool and I run, mountain bike, work on the acre of property.
Will being a physically strong guy help you in the competition?
That’s a good thing and maybe [also] staying in rhythm. Rhythm, I can kind of do, the beat, but then, doing all the changes and stuff kind of worries me.
Is there a chance you could come back to “GH” now that you’re back in L.A.?
Yeah, absolutely. I would love to. I’m always open to coming back, for short periods. We did that last year, so yeah. [And according to recent reports, it’s now a done deal!]
Even athletes have been injured on “DWTS.” Do you fear that?
Yes. Definitely. I don’t really get injured that much and a couple of days ago in rehearsal, we were doing some lifts and practicing some pretty cool stuff but a few years ago, I would have been like, “let’s do this one!” This time I went, “let’s put this off a few days” because my legs were getting really sore from doing all the lunging. Also, I’m trying to show Kym what my flexibility is and what I can do with my feet and how far I can stretch and lunge and kick.
Do you think you can win?
I can’t say that [but] it would be great. We gotta take it week by week and see where it goes. I’m really excited to get out there. I want to get the first Monday night [performance] over with already!
Season 16 of “Dancing with the Stars” premieres Monday, March 18 at 8/7c on ABC.
