Here’s some more pilot casting news to announce — news that will be welcomed by all fans of “Gilmore Girls”:
Alexis Bledel has been signed to co-star in a new prospective comedy series under consideration at Fox. In the show — titled “Friends & Family” — Bledel, 31, plays one half of a young couple struggling to ride herd on their respective families.
That’s the gist of it, according to this story on the Deadline.com Web site.
Jason Ritter, 30 — son of the late John Ritter — plays the other half of this couple in a sitcom that’s being adapted from a British comedy series called “Gavin & Stacey.” It’s the third time in recent years that American producers have eyed this UK sitcom for U.S. TV, according to this Wikipedia entry on the original show.
At first, we confused the title of that British show with an American sitcom from the 1990s called “Ned & Stacey,” which starred Debra Messing and Thomas Haden Church. Apparently, “Ned & Stacey” has no relation to “Gavin & Stacey” that we can discern.
Bledel, of course, is best known for playing plucky, fast-talking teen Rory Gilmore on “Gilmore Girls” from 1999 to 2007. She was last seen last season on “Mad Men,” in a multi-episode arc in which she played a suburban housewife who had an affair with Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser).
And now, our customary caveat for these pilot stories: It is now pilot season in Hollywood, a time when producers are frantically making pilot episodes of prospective drama and comedy series that they hope the networks will pick up for the fall lineups they’ll announce in May. Only a percentage of the pilots being produced now will make it on to those fall lineups, which means there’s no telling yet whether this Bledel and Ritter remake of “Gavin & Stacey” will ever make it onto TV. Fingers crossed, always.
