Fairy tales continue to be a wonderland of source material for TV shows.

ABC’s hit fairytale-themed show “Once Upon a Time” is considering giving one of the classic characters his own show.

The Mad Hatter could end up in a spin-off series, according to Deadline, but it also could be without the actor who originated the role on the ABC series, now in its second season.

Sebastian Stan has played the Mad Hatter on “OUAT” in at least six episodes, but prior work commitments, including a role in “Captain America,” may keep him from being available for the potential series. In lieu of having Stan as their main “mad” man, the network is “quietly” considering re-casting the part and putting out feelers.

The potential project would involve “Once’s” producing team of Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, with an eye toward a 13-episode commitment in contention for fall 2013, says the Deadline story.

There’s also the possibility that the Mad Hatter could return to “OUAT” later this season as a guest star, and in an episode potentially serving as a backdoor pilot.

There is already an Alice in Wonderland-themed pilot in the works at NBC called “Wonderland” from Anthony Zuiker (“CSI”).

“Once upon a Time” airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
