Kathy Griffin talked about taking her own 92 year-old mother to an erotic-toy store and Joan Rivers joked about the advantages of dating an amputee as the two queens of comedy took over NBC late-night on Friday.
When we watched Griffin on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” we were struck at first by the difference between the way Griffin behaves on Leno vs. the antics she exhibits when she appears on David Letterman’s “Late Show” on CBS. On the “Letterman” show, for example, she once stripped down to her underwear.
However, while Griffin, 52, kept her clothes on, she did manage to traffic in some R-rated material on “Leno” as she talked about her Bravo talk show, “Kathy,” which aired the night before.
That conversation included a photo of Griffin stripping down to her underwear on her talk show (come to think of it, she does that a lot in public!). She also told Jay about a recent bit she filmed for the talk show in which she took her mother — who’s seen frequently on all of Griffin’s TV shows — to the Pleasure Chest, a renowned “adult novelty” store. Leno showed a clip from the bit, which was seen in its entirety on “Kathy” Thursday night.
As she did on her own talk show on the previous evening, Griffin talked about last Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, where she was seen frequently in a seat behind Grammy nominee (and winner) Frank Ocean. Griffin was also a nominee — for the fifth consecutive year in the Comedy Album category. She lost, though — for the fifth time in a row.
In Part Two of her “Tonight Show” appearance, Griffin talked about her talk show — which Thursday night featured guest Russell Brand with rappers A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown. She also talked about the Pleasure Chest bit in Part Two. Take a look:
After “The Tonight Show,” it was Joan Rivers’ turn. She came on NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” to promote a variety of projects (at age 79, she remains one of the busiest personalities in show business).
She talked about her E! show “Fashion Police” (which will be critiquing the Oscar fashions after next Sunday’s big show), the return next Saturday (Feb. 23) of her reality show “Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best” on WE, and the release of a stand-up performance DVD titled “Don’t Start with Me.”
She also talked about a man she supposedly dated for nine years who had one leg. We have no idea if this was true or not, but despite the fact that this man (whether real or imagined) had recently died, she did a series of jokes about his amputation. Were they tasteless? Yes. Were they vintage Joan Rivers? Also yes.
