A CBS plan to develop a new, third addition to its high-rated “NCIS” franchise just took a big step forward with the casting of TV vet Kim Raver.

Raver, 43, has agreed to play the “central role” in the new “NCIS,” titled “NCIS: Red,” according to this story on the Hollywood Reporter Web site.

This new one will have Raver playing a character whose abilities border on superhuman — or at least super-gifted. The THR story describes the character, named Agent Paris, as “the leader of the Red team, who is athletic, smart and witty with a degree in forensic science. She can drive a golf ball 300 yards and has an IQ in the 98th percentile. She prefers to (and often does) work alone.”

The “Red” in the title refers to the high-profile, urgent, “code red”-type cases this new “NCIS” team will tackle. Unlike the original “NCIS,” which is based in Washington, and the West Coast-based “NCIS: Los Angeles,” the new “NCIS: Red” will have this new team traveling to various locations across the country as they are called in for investigations that only they are equipped to handle, the THR story indicates.

The pilot for “NCIS: Red” will reportedly air some time this spring as an episode of “NCIS: L.A.,” THR said — evidently a test to see if “NCIS” fans will take to this new group of investigators.

We predict they will. “NCIS” and “NCIS: L.A.” are among CBS’s strongest performers. Just this past Tuesday, the two back-to-back dramas drew 21.79 million and 16.67 million viewers, respectively. No wonder CBS wants to try out a third one.

On the new “NCIS: Red,” one of Raver’s co-stars will be John Corbett, as previously reported. Raver herself is one of the strongest leading ladies on television. Seen most recently on “Revolution” on NBC, she’s also had starring or recurring roles on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lipstick Jungle,” “24″ and “Third Watch.”
