“Modern Family” made a tiny addition to the cast in January when Gloria (Sofia Vergara) finally gave birth, presenting Jay (Ed O’Neill) with a bouncing baby boy, who, after a battle between Gloria’s mother and Jay, has since been named Fulgencio Joseph Pritchett.
As is the norm in Hollywood as a result of strict laws concerning babies on TV and movies sets, Fulgencio is being played by real-life twins, but even though there are two of them, they still need to have doll stand-ins.
“We also have a set of dead babies because some scenes you don’t actually use the baby because you are only supposed to use them for 20 minutes at a time, so we have this dead baby, which is pretty much the one I act with all the time,” Vergara jokes to reporters at a press day for her upcoming animated film, “Escape from Planet Earth,” opening in theaters on Friday, Feb. 15.
The new baby brings with it all kinds of new problems for the family, such as: How will Manny feel about no longer being the only child? How will Jay and Gloria cope with midnight feedings? How will Jay’s adult kids deal with having a brother who is young enough to be their kid?
But Vergara insists that being a new mom won’t change Gloria much and she is having a lot of fun on the set.
“I think she is a little bit more sensitive about everything,” she says. “Now, she is worried all the time about Manny’s feelings … she makes it more of an issue than he makes it.”
In real life, Vergara has a 21-year-old son, but she says that just because he is an adult now, the worries of being a mother don’t stop. They just change.
“My worries are: Don’t get in a car with anyone that is driving drunk. Don’t be stupid, like when he is in New York on his own. Don’t walk in a back alley. Use your head. Don’t go alone on the train at 3 in the morning. Stupid things like that as a mom, you never stop worrying.
“But I realized, for example, when he is at home with me now, when he comes from college to visit, I don’t sleep that night, because I know he is out. When it’s one o’clock, it’s like, ‘Why are you not back? You didn’t drink right? If not, I will go pick you up.’ I can’t sleep. But when he is gone, who knows what he is doing? He [could] be like running crazy, naked or who knows what? But I can sleep.”
