You know what they say: When Barbara Walters is away with chicken pox, Joel McHale will come out and play sick, sporting a face full of red paper dots like he did on Thursday’s episode of “The View.”

“You guys had me in Barbara’s dressing room, and I’m feeling really hot,” the “Soup” host joked to Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and the day’s guest co-host, Kris Jenner.

Walters has been off the show battling chicken pox since mid-January. She’s scheduled to return in three weeks.

“I would like to take a nap because I do not feel good,” McHale confessed. Hasselbeck, seemingly unsure whether to be amused or offended by the gag, tried to get the conversation going by asking if Joel was in “show heaven” with the fodder provided by Barbara’s absence and Kris’s presence. “Do you want to take some jabs while you’re here?” she asked, ignoring the most obvious jab spread across his face.

“I don’t need to take any jabs because I hear Kris has a talk show coming out, so that’s gonna be great for us,” McHale quipped.

Wanting to prove that she’s a “good sport” about all of the merciless Kardashian bashing Joel does on “The Soup,” Jenner showed a pair of videos from the satirical E! clip show to the audience while quietly balling her hands up into fists laughing and smiling. “I forgive you,” she said.

“We have not made that much fun of the Kardashians,” McHale admitted. Then, perhaps seeing the flames in Jenner’s eyes, he hedged,  “You guys are so insanely successful that it’s a very easy target. So, we must.”

McHale then praised Kardashians as “some of the friendliest people you’ve ever met.”

“I feel like they’re gonna hit me when I see them, and I don’t blame you,” he told Jenner. “But then you’re always so nice and then I feel bad.”

McHale went on to dish on which “Soup” victim he’d be the most scared to meet in person (Tyra Banks), and open up about the controversy surrounding Chevy Chase’s exit from “Community,” which returns for a fourth season tonight at 8/7c on NBC. Check out the highlights below:
