“How I Met Your Mother” is getting one more final season to tell its story and reveal the identity of the “mother” in the show’s title.

All cast members are on board for the show’s ninth and final season, according to an announcement Tuesday from CBS and Twentieth Television, which produces the comedy series for CBS.

There was no word in the press release on how many episodes the final season of “HIMYM” would get, but a separate story on Deadline.com (here) said the ninth-season order might be for as many as 24 half-hours.

In addition to cast members Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel, the show’s co-creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will also return for the ninth and final season, CBS said.

Premiering in September 2005, “How I Met Your Mother” started out, more or less, as the saga of a husband and father (Radnor) who was explaining to his children how he met their mother. Certainly, in eight seasons, the show has veered back and forth toward the consummation of that goal — namely, finishing the story and, in the process, revealing the identity of the unseen “mother” to viewers at home.

Fact is, “HIMYM” is still doing well for CBS anchoring the network’s Monday night comedy lineup at 8/7c. The most recent episode Jan. 21 (the one you can watch below) drew 10.07 million viewers.

This final-season renewal news means the show’s writers and producers now have a chance to craft just the right end-game for this “epic” sitcom. And CBS will have a chance to promote and (hopefully) build an audience right up until the final reveal next May.
