Bassett and Blige Share Surprises, Bonds of Playing Civil Rights Icons

Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige paid a visit to “The View” to talk about their new TV movie “Betty & Coretta.” The movie focuses on Coretta Scott King and Betty Shabazz, the widows of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and the friendship that developed between them after their husbands were assassinated.

“I think that it’s amazing that their shared tragedy and the fact that they’re women and nurturing and mothers of children that they were able to, you know, bond”, Bassett said of playing the widow of Dr. King.

“I didn’t know that Betty was a professional dancer that she loved to dance. And I didn’t know that Coretta wanted to be an opera singer! That was new to me and I didn’t know that they were friends”, added Blige who portrays Malcolm X’s widow.

“Betty & Coretta” will debut on Lifetime on Saturday, February 2 at 8pm.
