After getting Lance Armstrong to open up about his past, Oprah Winfrey followed that up with Drew Barrymore on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” and the famed actress teared up during the interview, promising to give her newborn daughter the stable childhood she never had.

Barrymore, along with husband Will Kopelman, showed off their four-month-old daughter Olive for the cameras. But the topic turned serious when it came to Barrymore’s own troubled past and bouts with addiction. The actress worried about her daughter learning about her mother’s past.

“I will absolutely instill in her that you cannot be ashamed of the journey that it took to get where you are if you are proud of yourself,” said told Oprah. “But I will also try to instill in her that I did not have guidance and that is why I lived my life that way. And although I am proud of it and I don’t want to spend the rest of my life regretting it, there is no option for her to take that path because she has guidance.”

Barrymore also delved into her own troubled relationship with her mother Jaid, from whom she emancipated herself when she was a teen.

“I will be there at 3PM in the school line waiting to pick her up,” she said of her own approach to motherhood. “That is first and foremost. I think that’s-as a kid-what I craved the most, just believing that that was going to be there.”

That lingering memory also explained why the couple did not invite Jaid to their wedding.

“She was not there, which was very hard. We both discussed it and thought it would be best (for her not to come).”
