Bill Moyers: Becoming American

From the Peabody award-winning PBS series comes the four-time Emmy-nominated documentary, Bill Moyers: Becoming American, now available on DVD. Through personal narratives and interviews with historians, legendary journalist Bill Moyers (Moyers & Company, PBS) tells the remarkable history of Chinese Americans, from the first wave of immigration in the 1850s to the present day.  Profound and deeply moving, Becoming American recounts the story of a people who have ventured, suffered, endured, and eventually prevailed—from war and famine in Guangdong province to a tenuous new life in America. The DVD 2-vol. boxed set features three episodes, as well as the bonus program Becoming American: Personal Journeys with Bill Moyers (81 min.), 16-page viewer’s guide with a timeline of significant events, history, statistics, and more. Becoming American debuted on PBS in March 2003 and is Athena’s fourteenth release from Moyers’ acclaimed library of programs. Rather than finding the “Gold Mountain” they expected in California, early arrivals faced hardship and hard work, battled poverty and prejudice, and experienced the loneliness of a people caught between two worlds. Through personal narratives and interviews with historians, Moyers recounts the remarkable transformation of a bachelor society confined to America’s Chinatowns into the new “model minority” and beyond—an integral part of the American mainstream and a vital part of the nation’s future. Along the way, he seeks advice from his old pals Gervais and Merchant (playing versions of themselves) in hopes that their A-list celebrity connections including Johnny Depp, Liam Neeson, Sting, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Carell, Cat Deely (who all cameo) will aid his career. ‘Life’s Too Short’ was created by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Warwick Davis; executive produced, written and directed by Gervais and Merchant; produced by Charlie Hanson. Battle For Brooklyn

Since the start of this NBA season, the cheers of major league sports fans are being heard in Brooklyn for the first time since baseball’s Dodgers went west 55 years ago. But not everyone is cheering. The story of the construction of the Barclays Center, a tale of citizens forced out of their homes by wealthy developers and politicians, is now told in the urgent documentary ‘Battle For Brooklyn.’ The latest work of honored filmmakers Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley is now available on DVD. ‘Battle For Brooklyn’ is an intimate look at the very public and passionate fight waged by residents and business owners of Brooklyn’s historic and densely populated Prospect Heights neighborhood as they face condemnation of their property to make way for the polarizing Atlantic Yards project, a massive plan to build 16 skyscrapers and a basketball arena for the New Jersey Nets. The film focuses on graphic designer Daniel Goldstein, whose apartment sits at what would be center court of the new arena. A reluctant activist, Goldstein is dragged into the fight because he can’t accept that the government should use the power of eminent domain to take his new apartment and hand it off to a private developer, Forest City Ratner. Farewell, My Queen

A young woman with a romantic devotion to Marie Antoinette witnesses crucial events of the French Revolution from inside the walls of the Palace of Versailles in the lavish and sumptuously shot ‘Farewell, My Queen.’ The acclaimed drama, based on the international best-selling novel by Chantal Thomas, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. ‘Farewell, My Queen’ marks the return to U.S. screens of acclaimed director Benoît Jacquot (A Single Girl, Sade, The School of Flesh), who brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie Antoinette (Diane Kruger, Inglourious Basterds, Unknown) in the final days before the full-scale outbreak of the revolution. The film stars Léa Seydoux (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Midnight in Paris) as Sidonie, one of Marie’s ladies-in-waiting, seemingly an innocent but quietly working her way into her mistress’ special favors, until history tosses her fate onto a decidedly different path. As the story of the revolt by the starving French people against their arrogant royal rulers – embodied by Marie – develops, the action moves effortlessly from the gilded drawing rooms of the nobles to the back quarters of those who serve them. Also starring Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach, 8 Women) and a great box-office success in domestic release, this is a period film at once accurate and sumptuous in its visual details – Jacquot shot within the walls of the actual Versailles – and modern in its emotions.
