This week’s episode of “Castle” was all about divorce, which means, of course, that it was also about marriage. Castle’s had two weddings. Beckett has never been married. That difference is highlighted when Castle’s ex-wife, Meredith, returns while at work the duo investigate the murder of a divorce lawyer. Because this show is awesome, her relationship with Beckett takes an unexpected turn that leads to a revelation about Castle. Here are the highlights.
This Giant Apartment Is Not Big Enough For the Three of Us: Beckett (Stana Katic) is staying with Castle (Nathan Fillion) while her apartment is being fumigated. Let’s be honest, this is an unspoken test run for the two of them moving in together. Castle’s ex-wife Meredith (Darby Stanchfield) shows up because Alexis has mono, and she is determined to make up for a lifetime of mediocre mothering by taking care of her. Castle agrees to let her move in for the duration of Alexis’s illness, because what could be better than having your ex-wife and your girlfriend under one roof? (Answer: pretty much anything.) Beckett is upset that Castle didn’t understand from the look that she gave him that she didn’t want him to let her stay. Lainie (Tamala Jones) tells Beckett not to let Meredith take over. She needs to mark her territory. Castle tries to give her the boot but chickens out. So Castle books a room at the Four Seasons, telling Beckett that they will have a romantic evening together. Beckett is not thrilled that Castle is moving her out so Meredith can stay when it should be the other way around. Meredith walks around the apartment in her underwear. Beckett can’t help feeling jealous when Castle and Meredith reminisce about the nutmeg coffee she used to make for him. Instead of becoming Beckett’s rival, Meredith invites her to dinner. Castle finds the prospect of the two women spending time together terrifying. Beckett tells Castle they are going to compare notes. The regretfully off-camera dinner goes great and the two women become friends. Meredith gives their relationship her blessing before leaving. Beckett asks her why her marriage ended. Meredith says that Castle knew everything about her, but never would reveal anything about himself. He hides his feelings behind quips. She invokes the long dormant mystery of the identity of Castle’s father. Beckett seems to be questioning whether the same dynamic applies to their relationship. Or maybe she just wants to find his father. Watch the clip and decide.
Two”General Hospital” Stars Play Unhappy Exes: The case of the week is convoluted even by Castle standards. A divorce lawyer who only represents women is murdered. The team investigates all of her clients. One, hilariously played by Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis, “General Hospital“) got a lousy settlement and is angry at the lawyer. But she has an alibi. She is destroying her ex’s possessions as a form of non-violent revenge. Her ex-husband comes home and a “War of the Roses” style battle ensues. It’s safe to say that Caskett will ever end up hating each other that much.
Jack Wagner (Friscom “General Hospital,” among many other roles) plays a golfer who is suspected of murdering his wife. There was never enough evidence to arrest him, but the the scandal destroyed his career. He is now a bitter drunk. He swears that he had nothing to do with the lawyer’s murder even though she was representing his wife. In fact, the wife turns out to be alive and well and living under an assumed identity. The lawyer had figured out that she was alive, so the not dead wife murdered her.
