Kooky comic Kathy Griffin refused to “apologize” for her behavior New Year’s Eve on CNN when David Letterman asked her about her latest escapades Wednesday night on his CBS “Late Show.”
The raunchy redhead made no excuses nor expressed any regrets over this latest incident, in which she seemed to simulate performing an oral sex act on Anderson Cooper while the two were co-hosting CNN’s live coverage of the New Year’s Eve festivities in New York’s Times Square Monday night.
It’s become an annual rite of New Year’s Eve: The seemingly uncontrollable Griffin flustering CNN’s straitlaced anchorman with her outrageous behavior. In the past, her antics have included dropping the occasional f-bomb and/or disrobing (in the freezing cold, no less).
“If you think this is the part where I’m going to apologize for trying to [insert slang for oral sex act] on Anderson Cooper, you are sorely mistaken,” Griffin told Letterman when he raised the subject.
As you’ll see if you watch the clip, above, Griffin then went on to explain what she did and why. The clip also includes the video from CNN’s New Year’s Eve telecast, so you can see what she did.
Our take: We wonder if Griffin’s New Year’s Eve antics will continue to be tolerated under the new regime coming soon to CNN (new president Jeff Zucker is due to take over any day now). Our own opinion is that Griffin’s behavior seems increasingly desperate each year. On the other hand, maybe she’s drawing an audience CNN would not otherwise have in that time period. We’ll see what happens next December.
Meanwhile, the “Letterman” show was one of three late-night shows that returned Wednesday night after a holiday hiatus. The other two were “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on NBC.
Griffin came on the “Letterman” show to promote her newest special on Bravo titled “Kathy Griffin: Kennedie Center On-Hers” (premiering tonight, Thursday, Jan. 3, at 10/9c), and the season premiere of her Bravo talk show “Kathy” on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 10/9c. The stand-up special’s title, of course, spoofs the “Kennedy Center Honors,” on which Letterman was an honoree last month.
