There’s been wide speculation since last night’s “X Factor” about just what was wrong with LeAnn Rimes. The country star guested on the show to duet with 13-year-old finalist Carly Rose Sonenclar on “How Do I Live,” and appeared a bit “out of it,” according to fans on Twitter and writers around the blogosphere, including this one. Some wondered whether Rimes was drunk, noticing that she awkwardly outsang her teenage duet partner, “looked wobbly” and “seemed to meander,” and that the performance was “uneven” and “uncomfortable.”
Now, Rimes has responded to the speculation. According to TMZ, she was not drunk, just “trying to help this 13-year-old girl who was having some trouble with the song.”
Rimes’s lawyer told TMZ that “LeAnn was not performing the way she would normally perform, because she was on stage with a young girl,” and that she was actually trying to help Carly with the notes, because the child prodigy was nervous.
Anyone who’s watched Carly Rose perform before, even in the same episode, might find it odd to think that she needed help with hitting any notes, but there you have it.
Whether Rimes’s, er, unusual performance will affect Carly Rose remains to be seen. The winner of “The X Factor” will be crowned tonight.
