When “Smash” returns for a second season on Tuesday, February 5, look for the NBC series to be infused with a “new energy,” according to star Megan Hilty.
This burst of energy in part is due to the Golden Globe-nominated drama’s creative overhaul, with new showrunner Josh Safran (“Gossip Girl“) replacing Season one’s Theresa Rebeck. But let’s be honest, what most people care about is stars, and Season 2 has them in spades with an A-list guest roster including Liza Minnelli, Jesse L. Martin, Sean Hayes, Nikki Blonsky and headlined by Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson. So how is Hudson faring as a newcomer on the show? Quite well, if the sneak peek video below is any indication.
“I’m having a ball recording all of the original music,” she says. “You’re constantly creating new things on so many different levels. One minute you’re in the studio, the next second you’re doing choreography, the next second you’re acting.”
Hudson plays Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning Broadway legend who influences both Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Hilty). “It’s a huge challenge but I love it,” Hudson adds of the role.
