"Freaks and Geeks" cast and crew reunite for Vanity Fair

It may have only lasted 18 episodes, but the legacy of NBC’s “Freaks and Geeks” lives on.

Vanity Fair reunited the stars of the short-lived series, which included some of today’s heavyweight celebrities as part of its Comedy Issue. The series featured such notable names as Jason Segel, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Busy Philipps, Lizzy Caplan, Linda Cardellini, and John Francis Daley.

For the reunion, guest editor (and former “Freaks and Geeks” executive producer) Judd Apatow interviewed some of the famed cast members in the issue, discussing the series beginnings-which launched a string of careers-as wellas the series’ untimely end and its impact on entertainment today.

“I remember Judd saying, ‘You guys are acting too cool. You’re acting like young guys who just got cast in a TV show. We need dudes that are a little insecure,” Franco said about the show’s beginnings. “He said, ‘We’re going to show you your audition, because this is what we liked.’ So I watched it and I’m like, Oh, man, I’m horrible. It was so goofy. But I think what I didn’t like is one of the better aspects of Daniel. I maybe took myself too seriously when I was a young actor.”

“We would get the script on a Friday, and Seth and James and I would get together at my house every Sunday, without fail, and do the scenes over and over and improve them and really think about them. We loved the show,” said Segel. “And we took the opportunity really, really seriously.”

“Everybody was so talented and nobody knew it yet,” said Cardellini.
