The David Petraeus sex scandal was a hot topic on the late-night shows Monday night, but it loomed especially large on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
The reason: The woman at the center of the scandal — Petraeus’ biographer and apparent love interest, Paula Broadwell — was a guest on the “Stewart” show earlier this year, and footage of that appearance soon cropped up all over the place over the weekend as news organizations foraged for any information they could find about the woman.
So, naturally, Stewart made hay of that on “The Daily Show” Monday night. “In case anyone out there thought I may have actual journalists’ instincts, I give you a quick snippet of my interview,” Stewart said, introducing a collection of quick clips of statements Broadwell made on “The Daily Show.”
“I am the worst journalist in the world!” Stewart declared after the clip collection aired, referring to his inability to sense that his guest may have had more than a professional relationship with the subject she was writing about.
Broadwell appeared on “The Daily Show” last January as part of her publicity tour promoting her biography of Petraeus, the former allied commander in Afghanistan who resigned as director of the CIA last Friday. Now, in light of the allegations that she and the four-star general carried on an extramarital affair while she was researching and writing the book (titled “All In”), video clips from the various TV appearances she made to promote the book have become part of TV’s coverage of the scandal. Among the places she appeared last winter was the “Charlie Rose” and C-Span, but “The Daily Show” seems to have been the only late-night comedy show on her publicity-tour schedule.
As you’ll see if watch the “Daily Show” video, Stewart commented on the Petraeus scandal in the context of the new James Bond movie, “Skyfall.” The “Daily Show” segment was even titled “Spyfall.” Well, Jay Leno also took up the James Bond topic when he joked about the scandal in his monologue Monday night on NBC’s “Tonight Show.” Watch:
On NBC’s “Late Night,” Jimmy Fallon managed, somehow, to get the Petraeus sex scandal and the reported breakup of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez into one joke.
Late-night’s other Jimmy — Jimmy Kimmel — also got into the Petraeus scandal Monday night via “Skyfall.” Kimmel used the James Bond movie as a segue to the CIA sex scandal — about three-and-a-half minutes into his monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. Watch:
