Mertina? Crisideth? Whatever you want to call them, Meredith (Ellem Pompeo) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) are the true “Grey’s Anatomy” supercouple. This week’s episode was all about their relationship. It was the show’s most satisfying outing since the season premiere. Throughout the episode, Meredith and Cristina are on the phone or Skypeing and it’s a reminder of how great the characters are when they’re together.
Cristina’s Sex Friend/Boss, Parker (Steven Culp), asks her if she likes to be the big spoon or the little spoon. She voices over, “I am not a spoon. I’m a knife and I’m going to stab you in the eyeball.” This is why Christina rules.
In honor of the upcoming “Boy Meets World” spin-off “Girl Meets World,” William Daniels’ character, Dr. Thomas, shall be called Mr. Feeny for the duration of this recap.
Cristina and Mr. Feeny have a patient with a giant heart aneurysm. The patient and her husband are doomsday preparers. Parker is angry Cristina wants to work with Thomas and not him. He is so, so gross. Cristina’s PTD is no excuse for hooking up with him. The aneurysm explodes during surgery, and Parker blames Mr. Feeny. Sex Buddy demands his resignation. He refuses. So Parker demands he sign off on everything. He asks Cristina to talk to him. Feeny insists on doing a second surgery even though if he does it means getting fired. Parker tells her that Feeny is holding her back and once he is gone she will see that. His issue also seems to be that Feeny is insubordinate. It’s like he is jealous of Cristina and Feeny’s relationship. Feeny says if he goes he’s going to go down fighting.
Meredith stumbles upon a horrific car accident and persuades bystanders to move a car off an injured woman. Meredith, thinking of the plane crash, keeps performing surgery when she should not. The Chief makes her close the patient up. He wants to take over the surgery. Meredith decides to go back in and save the woman’s life. She insists to the Chief that this is not a repeat of the Lexie situation.
Meredith’s subplot has her dealing with how to take care of a sick Zola while Derek is out of town. Daycare won’t take her because she has a fever. It’s implausible that a two-doctor household would not have a nanny, but this storyline makes me realize that “Grey’s” of one of the few shows on television to show how difficult it is for working mothers of young children.
Meredith’s surgery is difficult while hristina’s seems to be going well. Feeny tells Cristina that she will be the surgeon of her generation if she finds the source of the bleeding. Dr. Thomas collapses during surgery. Cristina takes over while other doctors defib him. Cristina saves the patient but is devastated by her Minnesota BFF’s death. Hell, I’m devastated. He was a great character. Feeny’s words about how she is better than everyone else and will be misunderstood echo in her mind.
The episode ends with Meredith answering her doorbell. It’s Cristina. She drank her way through the flight. Finally, the dynamic duo has reunited.
