The problem with these sing/dance for your life deals on these competitions is that you have to watch more of the people you don’t really want to watch. The best folks just get to go backstage and wait it out while we have to watch one last performance from the less great singers.
But on “The X Factor,” where the first live production numbers — er, performances — were over-the-top and generally terrible for everyone, the sing-off is an opportunity to see how great these people actually can be.
Everyone did far better than they had the previous night. Which leads me to wonder, why the big production numbers, when a singer and song are so much more powerful? CeCe Frey writhing on the stage vs. last night’s solo number that brought her yet again to fake non-existent tears? Arin Ray’s boring dance show vs. his beautiful “I Look to You”? It doesn’t make sense that we even have to endure the Wednesday show when Thursday’s is so much better.
The judges each shaved one singer off their teams Thursday night, and it was all their own choice. Demi Lovato sent Willie Jones home; LA Reid cut David Correy; Britney Spears mercilessly cut Diamond White; and Simon Cowell sent Sister C home.
So while most performers did better last night, one did even worse (if that’s possible) –Khloe Kardashian Odom. She was as stiff as her blue leather dress that seemed to have no give (don’t want to know how sweaty it was in there). She’s such a contrast to old pro Mario Lopez—you can see her reading the teleprompter. She says things like “I’m feeling good” in complete monotone.
And her interviewing skills? At one point, she interrupted a shaking, crying Jennel to call Paige over. Then in the middle of interviewing Paige, kept taking the mic away. Ok, maybe Paige’s human-sized hat was distracting her, I’ll give her that.
She couldn’t even break to commercial properly, telling Simon to give us his choice, “but I want you to wait until after the break.” Um, ok? He seemed to be saying with his face.
Does Simon get to cut down the number of hosts, too?
