The Knockout Round wrapped up tonight on “The Voice,” with Team Christina and Team Blake narrowing their teams down by half going into next week’s live “playoffs.”
Christina Aguilera stuck to her guns about her vision for her team, eliminating both of her steals and keeping four pop girls and one pop guy. Some of her choices were predictable: if someone sings Whitney, keep them (Devyn DeLoera). If someone sings a Christina song, keep them (Sylvia Yacoub). If you hit some crazy ridiculous note, keep them (Adriana Louise).
The toss-ups were Alessandra Guercio vs. Dez Duron and Chevonne vs. De’borah, mainly because Christina had never worked with Alessandra or Chevonne before. That proved to be a handicap to those two, as Christina seemed stubbornly attached to her original choices. So, despite Alessandra outperforming Dez, and Chevonne tearing the stage up just a little more than De’borah, they both got sent home.
Final Team Xtina: Devyn DeLoera, Sylvia Yacoub, Adriana Louise, Dez Duron, De’borah.
Blake Shelton, on the other hand, tried to eliminate redundancies in order to make a diverse team.
He started with two bleach-blonde country girls, Gracia “Yodels” Harrison and Liz “Short-Shorts” Davis. In yet ANOTHER reference to Blake’s wife, Miranda Lambert, Liz sang her “I’m Goin’ Home.” Is Blake engineering all the Miranda mentions on this show so he gets a little bonus via royalties? Anyway, Short-Shorts won that round.
Then, Blake faced off two family guys—grandpa Rudy Parris and dad Terry McDermott. Terry was better all around on “Baby I’m Amazed,” and took that round.
That basically ended Blake’s even matches. The rest were sort of random: mariachi guy vs. pop girl, boring college guy vs. punk girl, band frontwoman vs. music teacher. And the winners are: mariachi guy (Julio Cesar Castillo), punk girl (Michaela Paige) and frontwoman (Cassadee Pope).
Final Team Blake: Julio Cesar Castillo, Michaela Paige, Cassadee Pope, Liz Davis, Terry McDermott.
Even though tonight was all about Christina and Blake, Cee Lo Green had a couple of the best moments of the night. After his previous cast-off Chevonne performed, he said he would have loved to have her (and De’borah) on his team. “I was on your team,” Chevonne reminded him. Oops!
Later on, responding to the performance of Sylvia Yacoub vs Aquile, Cee Lo said, “Yo dawg, that was hype, dope and fresh.”
“No, I said Cee Lo,” Carson Daly replied.
“Randy Jackson everybody!” Adam Levine announced, followed by Blake’s clueless, “Who’s Randy Jackson?”
We’ve been wondering that for years.
