Marriage engagements between two sitcom characters are among the corniest of all plot devices, but a proposal scene performed this past Thursday night on “Parks and Recreation” was an exception.
The scene was more charm than corn — a lot more — as political consultant Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) surprised plucky Pawnee, Ind., city councilwoman Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) with a marriage proposal, just at a point when she felt their relationship was unraveling.
That was because Ben seemed to be on the verge of accepting a new consulting job in Florida — preventing him from returning home from Washington, D.C., to move into the new home Leslie had just leased.
But as she was saying farewell to the house, Ben appeared, got on one knee and popped the question — a great scene.
“When I read that scene, I cried because I was so happy that I had my job at ‘Parks’ and that I got to do that scene with Adam and that ["Parks and Rec" scribe] Mike Schur wrote it, because I knew it would be great,” Poehler said in a teleconference with reporters on Friday, reported here, in the Washington Post. “It’s very rare as an actor when you know it’s going to be great. You can just kind of see it.”
Watch the whole show, or skip to the scene itself, which is near the end of the episode — above.
