‘Once Upon a Time’ Takes Monstrous Turn: ‘He’s Alive?’

It’s a grim fairytale for sure when the next chapter of “Once Upon a Time” brings us a monster mash of an episode timed perfectly for Halloween (and the “Frankenstorm” brewing along the East Coast)!

As we learned previously, the reason why cold-hearted Regina (Lana Parilla) is such a heartbreaker (she literally rips out hearts and stores them in a vault!) is because hers turned to stone when her true love Daniel died.

But on Sunday’s new episode, “The Doctor,” the evil queen meets her ex-lover’s maker with the return of Dr. Whale (David Anders) — and he’s practicing some bad, bad medicine.

Mystery has surrounded the doc for two seasons now, with viewers always left wondering … he’s Dr. who and what’s his deal? But the mystery will be revealed in this week’s Regina-centric episode in which she continues to struggle with not using her magic in attempts to win Henry back — and begins to be haunted by a ghost from her past.

In the scene above, Regina discovers an injured Dr. Whale in a dark trashed lab, where she demands the truth after informing him that she knows he “took Daniel’s body and one of her hearts.”

“Did you bring him back?” an unusually emotional Ms. Mayor asks desperately.

He’s … alive,” the wide-eyed Whale replies.

But that’s not necessarily a good thing. Especially if, upon recalling that famous monster movie line, you consider that “OUAT” producers may have named Dr. Whale as a wink to James Whale — the director of the infamous 1931 film, “Frankenstein,” as some media sites suggest.

Meanwhile, in the broken landscape of Fairytale land, Mary Margaret and Emma may end up lending a hand to a certain somebody when they discover the lone survivor of an ogre massacre — which also features a massive theft of their hearts. But we’re hoping they don’t get manipulated and hooked by his handsomeness, otherwise two very bad characters may actually find their way to Storybrooke.

“Once Upon a Time” airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
