It was tricks and treats on Wednesday night’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” — which excitedly brought us the first live TV interview in 20 years with elusive Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose.
The interview was a huge success for the mere fact that the singer actually showed up (Rose is notorious for his reputation for lateness and being a no-show).
“First of all, you’re right on time, it’s unbelievable, you’re very punctual,” an “excited” Jimmy Kimmel began.
“It’s a miracle,” Axl smiled, as he sat down to rousing applause from the audience.
Rose admitted he wasn’t quite sure why he agreed to the interview after such a long absence other than “he was asked” and well, he does have something to promote: the band’s 12-night residency at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, which kicks off on Halloween night.
Here are five things we learned about Axl Rose from his late-night interview with Jimmy Kimmel.
~ He once managed a Tower Records store in Los Angeles. But it was a brief stint and he was a pretty lenient boss, as one can imagine, considering his own time-management habits and thoughts on punctuality. Note: He has the Oscar Wilde quote “Punctuality is the thief of time” hanging on his wall at home.
~ He first made his way to Los Angeles back in the day by hitchhiking. And yes, he met some shady characters along the way, even by Axl standards.
~ He invented the “Halloween Tree”: “It’s the most evil thing I’ve ever done,” Rose said. His love for Halloween led him to decorating a tree with candy and presents, and taunting his friends’ children saying, “You mean you don’t have a Halloween tree?”
P.S.: He once dressed up as an ear of corn for Halloween. And if it was during his corn-rows hairdo phase, Kimmel noted, that would be really … corny.
~ He does not rock the vote: “I don’t really vote,” Rose admitted, which is curious considering GN’R's Hard Rock residency is called … “Appetite for Democracy.” But if he did, he’d totally be Team Obama, just FYI.
~ He likes to give gifts: Axl surprised the audience with two tickets to the Guns N’ Roses Vegas show, and to whet their “Appetites” even more, he brought along a Burger Food Truck to Kimmel’s studio.
