Kathie Lee Gifford is a “wreck” after a puppy fell out of her arms and flipped over on its head during a pet adoption segment on Thursday’s “Today” show.
As Gifford took one of the rambunctious pups in her arms from segment guest Nigel Barker (former “Top Model” judge), who was promoting a new animal-adoption App, she joked, “Puppy needs a bath-y,” just as the lil’ guy went flying out of her hands headfirst into the doggie playpen.
“Oh sorry, sorry!” Kathie Lee exclaimed, as her fourth-hour co-host Hoda Kotb covered her mouth in horror (and masking her giggles).

The puppy is fine, by the way, but Kathie Lee is not, as she and Hoda explained in a call Friday to Matt Lauer discussing the incident.
“Kathie Lee, have you gotten over this yet?” Lauer asked.
“The puppy’s okay, but I’m a wreck!” an upset Gifford replied. “It’s very upsetting for me. I have three dogs of my own and I adore dogs.”
She then explained what went wrong, joking, “The problem is that that dog didn’t want to go home with Hoda…” — Hoda then interjected, “I’m on the phone!” — as Kathie Lee continued, “He knows Hoda’s looking to adopt a dog, and he knows what her apartment’s like, and there’s no way.”
Hoda didn’t deny her apartment might not be puppy-friendly, but admitted, “I was terrified for that dog when it took that kamikaze dive away from Kathie Lee.”
