Here comes the judge! Former “American Idol” and “X Factor” judge Paula Abdul will shake things up at “Dancing with the Stars” next week when she acts as a guest judge.
And after Tuesday night’s results show, the singer/dancer/choreographer/reality TV judge spoke to reporters about what to expect from her one-shot guest gig and how she will fit in with the “DWTS” crew — as only Paula can!
Paula said she got the job because “I was invited. And I was just saying to ["DWTS" casting director] Deena Katz, ‘I finally grew up enough. Now you’re letting me on the show.’ It’s like, ‘you’re not old enough, Paula. When you grow up you can come on the show.’ No. I’ve been such a fan since Season 1 and I was fortunate enough to be a part of ‘Idol’ [which shot in the studio] next door and during commercial breaks, I would run over here and touch what’s going on with ["DWTS"] and then I’d run back to my ["Idol"] seat, and I feel like it’s been like a decade-plus of extended family. My dressing room was within throwing spit wads and water balloons [distance] to ["DWTS" host] Tom Bergeron. We did shenanigans like that.”
See How Tuesday Night’s Double “DWTS: All-Star” Elimination Went Down:
According to Paula, the “All-Stars” “have the most beautiful highlights throughout the season and you see how talented these pros really are. The choreography at times takes your breath away.
“But above and beyond all of that, what I love so much about this show is that I know what dance does to people. I know how it transforms your life and gets into that spirit and psyche and makes your heart lighter.”
What kind of judge will Paula be on “DWTS”? She pointed out that judging this “All-Stars” season “is more difficult because the talent’s so good. And what happens is, you get carried away watching something you’re so passionate about. Carrie Ann [Inaba] and Len [Goodman] and Bruno [Tonioli] all have their critical eye of how they see things and they’re technical. They’re wonderful at what they do and have been doing this for so long. For me, I’m bringing a different perspective as someone who’s had the blessing of coming up with dance and music and having a career in dance. I’m coming strictly from how it moves me.”
Relive the Best Dances from Week 3:
Sabrina Bryan and “DWTS” pro Derek Hough, who are both competing this season, have said Paula Abdul was a major inspiration to them. “Derek just told me he grew up learning a lot of choreography from my videos and I hear that and I never take any of that for granted. I get emotional hearing that because it’s wonderful to know that you’ve made a difference in some people’s lives,” she said.
During a visit to “DWTS” many seasons ago, Paula told reporters that she would like to be a celebrity competitor on the show because even though she’d been a dancer/choreographer, she had never done ballroom partnering before. But on Tuesday, she told xfinityTV she doesn’t think she ever will: “In my dreams, my bucket list, that would absolutely be brilliant. I don’t think that’s in the cards for me. In another lifetime, that would be fun to live out because it would be wonderful to dance with someone who lives this as well.”
For now, fans will have to be content to see her at the “DWTS” judges’ table right next door to the studio where she once squabbled with Simon Cowell. Len Goodman, look out!
