Newly engaged Sam Champion was beaming Monday morning on “Good Morning America” as he thanked viewers for their good wishes, following his announcement last Friday that he is engaged to boyfriend Rubem Robierb.
“The amazing response from folks all over the country was just incredible for us,” said Champion, 51, as Robierb stood off-camera at “GMA’s” Times Square studios in New York. “I felt like we lived in a small town,” Champion said of the weekend he spent with Robierb in New York, where strangers were congratulating them. “I was born in Paducah, Ky.,” Champion said, “and to me that’s exactly what it felt like. We walked out on the street and everyone was like, ‘Hey, congratulations.’ Thank you for the tweets, and the Facebook and just coming up on the street and saying the most wonderful things.”
Brazilian-born Robierb is a Miami-based photographer. The couple met several years ago. “I have met the most wonderful, giving, loving, caring person,” Champion told his colleagues on Monday’s “GMA.” “I am so, so lucky to have someone like this in my life.”
Everyone on “GMA” was taken with Sam’s happiness. “Making George and I your best men, that’s just terrific!” said “GMA” co-host Josh Elliott, referring to George Stephanopoulos. The two will apparently be groomsmen at the wedding, which will take place later this year on a date yet to be announced. “He’s a groomzilla already,” Elliott joked about Champion.
Even guest Ben Affleck offered his warm wishes. “I want to congratulate Sam,” said Affleck, who used the occasion to make a point about same-sex marriage. “It’s to our shame that you can’t get married in every state in the union, but one day I hope you will be able to. It’s very exciting. I was very inspired … a moving love story.”
