Kate Gosselin admits it’s tough to watch her old “drill sergeant” self from the heyday of “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” but she doesn’t blame life in the fishbowl of reality TV for her doomed marriage.
The reality TV star appeared on “Katie,” which focused on reality TV (and also featured “Dance Moms” and “Long Island Medium”), and rehashed (for the umpteenth time) the breakdown of her relationship while in the public eye.
But Gosselin, 37, doesn’t blame her TLC reality show for the demise of her 10-year marriage to Jon Gosselin, 35, with whom she has eight children — 11-year-old twins and eight-year-old sextuplets.
“A lot of people try to pin reality TV and say,’My gosh. It ended in divorce. Big surprise.’ We went through a lot,” Kate explained to Katie Couric. “The signs were always there, and obviously having eight kids in a short span of time didn’t help that.”
“And I’m not at all blaming my kids,” she added, “I’m just saying…”
“I know the red flags were always there,” she continued. “So looking back, had you never heard the names Jon and Kate Gosselin, I’m certain that I would be in that spot now. It’s hard because like any mom I just want the best for my kids.”
The Gosselins officially divorced in December 2009 after explosive claims of Jon’s infidelity played out on the show.
But when it came to discussing her hardened public image, a reputation that first stemmed from her berating Jon on-camera, Gosselin got choked up.
“When you go through a lot, you realize what’s important… and… I’m learning to let go of the little stuff,” Kate told Katie.
“Everybody, as you get older, you mature,” she added. “My heart was always in the right place, I was just more focused on — oh, my gosh, you’re outfit — you’ve got something on your shirt!
“Now, it’s like really? That’s what washing machines are for.”
