“Hart of Dixie” returns for a second season on Tuesday, Oct. 2. When we last visited quirky Blue Bell, Alabama, Zoe (Rachel Bilson) and Hot Neighbor Wade (Wilson Bethel) just hooked up and George (Scott Proter) and Lemon (Jaime King) broke up. Then George planted a kiss on Zoe while Wade was in the next room, basking in the afterglow! That makes for a very pointy love triangle this season. In a recent interview, King previewed how her Southern Belle character, like Scarlett O’Hara, will rise from the ashes and what’s in store for the rest of the lovelorn folks in Bluebell.
Zoe Makes Her Choice: Despite George’s proclamation of his feelings, Zoe’s hot night with Wade has her convinced that the bartender is the right man for her — or at least Mr. Right Now. Showrunner Leila Gerstein tells TVLine, “I’m sure that Wade fans are going to be very, very happy. What we have done so far [in Season 2] is very strong for ‘Zade’ fans. Wade stakes his claim for Zoe right away by thanking her for the great night in front of George. This ultimately leads to fisticuffs. However, the triangle is by no means over. Every possible pairing is still in play, in the grand tradition of TV polygons. There’s still a lot of push and pull on Zoe, and you will feel both sides continually — even though she does make a decision.”
Watch: Rachel Bilson Discusses the New Season on ‘Today’:
Lemon Goes to Work: After the demise of her relationship, Lemon realizes she needs to change her life. King tells XfinityTV.com, “I haven’t been taught to be anything but a mother and a wife. And I’ve got to figure it out.” That means joining the 21st century and finding a job. “Lemon out on her own, Lemon trying to find a job and figure out who she is and it’s really fricken funny,” she says. “I think she thinks she’s qualified for everything under the sun that you would never possibly think from, like, chef to mogul. She ends up doing some mundane things that would be the antithesis of Lemon Breeland… Then she kind of finds her way toward the end of the season.”
But Don’t Count Out Lemon and Lavon: Lemon spent Season 1 fighting her feelings for Lavon (Cress Williams) while planning her wedding to George. She may claim she is determined to be an independent woman, but the mayor still makes her heart go pitter patter. She will find herself drawn to him again when she works on his reelection campaign. The Halloween episode will focus on their relationship. However, Lemon will face a rival for Lavon’s affections when his high school sweet heart Ruby (Golden Brooks) returns to BlueBell. Of course, Ruby will strike up a friendship with Zoe, heightening the Lemon-Zoe rivalry.
George Juggles a Bevy of Women: George bounces back from Zoe’s rejection by playing the field. He embarks on what will turn into a potentially serious relationship with a woman who is the opposite of Lemon, a tomboy with a great sense of humor named Presley. (The show missed an opportunity by not naming her after produce.) He will also get a potential love interest named Shelby, played by Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy.
Zoe and Lemon Bury the Hatchet - Literally and Figuratively: Lemon points a knife at Zoe in this promo for the season premiere. According to King, appearances can be deceiving. “She’ll always have a quote unquote rivalry with Zoe. She has to be the antagonist,” she admits. “But I love it because they have moments where Zoe and I actually really connect emotionally. Because we’re actually very similar characters. As different as they may seen, there’s a lot that Zoe and Lemon have in common.”
The Season 2 Premiere of “Hart of Dixie” airs Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 8/7c on The CW.
