LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – “Hairspray” star Nikki Blonsky has signed on for the musical drama as a recurring cast member for the series, an NBC spokeswoman told TheWrap.
No details about Blonsky’s character were available, or about how many episodes she will appear on. However, Blonsky’s new castmate Wesley Taylor, who plays Bobby on the series, tweeted a picture of Blonsky on the set of the series Monday morning.
Blonsky joins a growing list of actors who have come aboard the show for its second go-round. Last week, NBC said that original “Rent” star Jesse L. Martin had signed on for a six-episode arc as Scott Welker, the artistic director of the fictional Manhattan Theatre Workshop. “Dreamgirls” star Jennifer Hudson has also signed on for a multi-episode run, as Tony Award-winning Broadway star Veronica Moore.
“Smash” underwent a shakeup following the conclusion of its first season, with series creator with creator and showrunner Theresa Rebeck departing, along with numerous cast members.
The series will return for its second round midseason.
