That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

NBC newsman Tom Brokaw gave a more-detailed account of how he came to mistakenly swallow an Ambien tablet Thursday morning and later landed in a Charlotte hospital.

Back in New York Friday, Brokaw, 72, told Jimmy Fallon all about it on NBC’s “Late Night.”

Brokaw good-naturedly related how he habitually ingests two baby aspirin every morning — a preventive measure recommended by some experts in the health field for helping ward off heart attacks (apparently, aspirin — baby or otherwise — thins the blood).

“You scared us yesterday,” Jimmy said.

“I did have an episode where I, at my advanced age, got up early in the morning after having worked late the night before [contributing to NBC's coverage of the Democratic National Convention], did a little stretching …,” he said.

“And you get to a certain age, you take two baby aspirin in the morning, and it turns out I took not just two baby aspirin — I took one baby aspirin and an Ambien by mistake!” Brokaw said. For some reason, Fallon laughed uproariously at this, which didn’t seem entirely appropriate. To us, he came across like that guy who sits near you in a theater during a serious movie or play, and he laughs at times that don’t strike anyone else as funny.

Anyway, Brokaw continued: “I was fine for about 45 minutes. I mean, I was coherent. I was talking to people and then I remember somebody [clipping] on a microphone and the next thing I know is, I’m looking into the eyes of an EMT.”

What happened was, Brokaw basically passed out on the set of “Morning Joe,” the MSNBC morning show on which he was appearing as a panelist to discuss Wednesday night’s convention highlights. He was hospitalized that day, underwent an examination, was declared healthy and released after a few hours.

Meanwhile, another highlight from Friday’s “Fallon”:

Jimmy opened the show with another one of his musical impersonations. In this one, he imitated James Taylor to sing a song about the Democratic National Convention to the tune of one of Taylor’s biggest hits, “Fire & Rain.”

A couple of things about this song: Once again, TLC’s Honey Boo Boo made it into a late-night comedy bit (for the third or fourth time this past week — we’ve lost count!) when Jimmy sang in Taylor’s voice, “Just yesterday evening, I turned the DNC on. Had to DVR Honey Boo-ooh Boo …”

And the other thing we wondered when we saw this performance: Was Jimmy actually endorsing President Obama for re-election? We think he was — sort of.

You can decide for yourself — the performance is right here at the beginning of the show:
