The Olympics may be over now but NBC’s keeping it patriotic with an all-new reality competition “Stars Earn Stripes,” premiering tonight, in which stars compete in real-life military missions and training exercises.
The stars will also earn more than their stripes — the cash winnings will benefit military-based charities.
The celebrities are mentored by elite military personnel and first-responder operatives, and that’s one big reason “Stripes” contestant Todd Palin wanted to join the show.
xfinityTV recently spoke with Todd Palin at an NBC stars party in LA, where he was accompanied by his wife, former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
“It’s a competition that sheds a light on our military… there’s no question I was honored to be a part of it,” Todd Palin told me. And Sarah supported his decision to go on a reality show, something of a trend in the Palin family (their daughter Bristol Palin is returning to compete on “DWTS: All-Stars” this season).
“She’s all encouragement… she knows what I’m capable of from watching compete through the years and just said go out there and do your best and have a good time,” Todd of the advice he received from his wife. While his casting alongside top athletes may have been a surprise to some, Palin’s performance on the show actually surprised his fellow competitors. Watch the Clip Below.
Palin is no stranger to competition — he’s a four-time Iron Dog snowmobile race champion — but he did admit he knew he was in for a serious challenge when he heard who some of the other “Stars” joining the show were…an Olympian, a world boxing champ, a former NFL star…even Superman himself.
“I was like oh boy, here we go…these are professional athletes…and Dean Cain – he was Superman!” Palin said. “But I didn’t dwell on it. I was honored to be there with the military ops and these guys.
“I really didn’t know what to expect,” he added, “but at end of the day, here’s real celebrities that weren’t afraid to roll up there sleeves and jump off helicopters.”
The full cast of “Stars” includes: four-time undefeated world boxing champion Laila Ali; “Superman” Dean Cain; actor and former NFL player Terry Crews (“The Expendables 2″); TV personality Nick Lachey; Sarah Palin‘s husband (and four-time Iron Dog snowmobile race champion) Todd Palin; “The Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince; Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street; and WWE diva Eve Torres.
“Stars Earn Stripes” premieres tonight from 8-10 p.m. ET on NBC.
