Pop star Nick Jonas is confirming that he’s under consideration to join “American Idol” as a new judge.
Jonas, 19, broadcast this news via Twitter (apparently cutting out the need for a p.r. rep). “The rumors are true…,” he tweeted. “I am being considered to be a judge on ‘American Idol,’ and it would be a dream come true if it happens.”
You bet it would be: Mariah Carey just signed on to earn a cool $17 million to be a judge on the aging Fox talent show. Whether the youngest of the three Jonas brothers can command that kind of money remains to be seen. Suffice it to say, he’ll make millions.
Our take: For a 19-year-old, this Jonas kid is nothing if not shrewd. By issuing this Tweet, he gets his name back in the headlines for one of the open “American Idol” judging jobs, and possibly moves him ahead of the other candidates in the battle for public opinion.
We last wrote about his candidacy for the job about a week ago, pairing him with rapper and producer Pharrell Williams, 39, another candidate who is said to be in the running for an “Idol” post. Now, as you can see, Nick Jonas as this story’s headline all to himself.
The thing that fascinates us most about this whole “Idol” judging story: None of it has ever been confirmed by producers or anyone from Fox, other than officially announcing the hiring of Carey, and the exits of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. We don’t even know if Randy Jackson’s sticking around.
Despite the relative lack of real information, this “Idol” judging story has emerged as the most talked-about TV topic of the summer.
