Mindy Kaling is one of several departing “Office” mates exiting the NBC sitcom this year, but for good reason. She’s starring in her own show “The Mindy Project” on Fox.

Before she packs up her desk for good, Kaling will head back into “The Office” for one or maybe two more episodes to wrap up her character Kelly’s storyline.

“It’ll be fun to see what happens to Kelly,” says Kaling, who adds she’ll appear in the season premiere.

Kaling tells TV critics that headlining her own show is “awesome.”

“Every day I wake up and I’m like, Oh I’m the star of my own show that has my own name in it and I get to write it and hire actors I love … I’m going to turn into a monster,” Kaling said. “Like, I can’t handle it.”

Kaling stars as an OB/GYN juggling her personal and professional lives in “The Mindy Project,” which premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9:30/8:30c on Fox.

The “Project” will feature a strong romantic element because Kaling says, “Most people who grew up as nerds, as I was, love romance.”
